Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn at Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. After her father died as a carnival barker, at the age of an infant and she was forced to keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She went to school there. In the midst of only two years in school the young woman left to pursue an acting profession. This path was fraught with difficulties. After landing a gig at New York as a model for a detective magazine she was unable to find opportunities for stage. After working as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she quit and returned to Boston. She made the ends meet by working by working as an usher throughout the day, and working at night with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She took classes in drama at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
